In 2019, the U.S. CBP seized $1.3 billion worth of counterfeit goods. Counterfeit items have been a growing problem within the United States, resulting in large impacts on America’s economic growth. Counterfeit items can also pose a threat to consumers’ health and safety.
On May 20, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced their partnership with NIKE, Inc. in which NIKE, Inc. will be donating proprietary technology to help authenticate their merchandise and prevent counterfeit items from coming into the United States. This collaboration strengthens enforcement efforts and border security to hinder the entrance of counterfeit products that put our economy and its consumers at risk.
“As criminal organizations use proceeds from counterfeit sales to fund other illegal activity, our partnerships help strengthen our border security posture through innovation and resource optimization,” said Diane Sabatino, Deputy Executive Assistant Commissioner of the CBP Office of Field Operations. “Our partnerships with stakeholders are vital to CBP’s enforcement mission and continued success in protecting U.S. businesses and consumers from counterfeit goods.”
