The Aluminum Import Monitoring (AIM) system regulations, as well as the AIM website, have both been established by the U.S. Department of Commerce on December 23, 2020. As a result, starting January 25, 2021, at 12:00 AM EST licenses will be required for imports of aluminum products covered on this list: https://www.trade.gov/aluminum-products-hts-codes.
To apply for the AIM licensing application you must create a SIMA account. Since both, AIM and SIMA licensing applications share the same platform, you would only need one account. Meaning: if you already have a SIMA account, you do not need to create another; you can use your existing SIMA account to apply for an aluminum license starting on January 4, 2021. Again, in order to apply for an aluminum license, you must have a SIMA account. You can create an account at https://www.trade.gov/aluminum.
Aluminum application forms will be available starting on January 4, 2021. The aluminum application form is different than the steel application form, so make sure you select the correct form before entering the respective HTS codes.
You can also register for a demo of the AIM licensing system by emailing: aluminum.license@trade.gov, the meeting number and the date/time of the demo you would like to participate in from the list below:
Thursday, January 7th, 2021 @ 1:00 PM EST
